"− One in two Europeans uses the Internet, and the number of online purchases has doubled over the last six years. Nevertheless, the online market is still not being used to its full potential. The existence of minimum harmonisation clauses has resulted in the fragmentation of the regulatory framework, hindering the completion of the single market. The adopted report helps to improve the functioning of the internal market, while at the same time bolstering consumer confidence. Businesses have too often struggled until now to operate not only in their national market but also in transnational markets. Excessive fragmentation has also reduced the choice of millions of European citizens and made them less confident about purchasing goods from abroad. The proposal adopted today introduces the obligation to provide clear and legible information, encouraging shrewd and informed choices. Consumers will have recourse to a number of remedies in the event that they purchase a product that does not conform to the contract, and they will be entitled to claim damages if no remedy is provided. Provision is also made for the publication of a list of terms that are considered unfair and are therefore prohibited throughout the European Union."@en1
