Everyone is now aware of the need for an improved economic governance framework to guarantee a more robust EU national economic policy surveillance framework. Furthermore, this surveillance should be broadened to prevent harmful macroeconomic imbalances, with a guarantee that, in future, it will go beyond fiscal policy and that its remit will be extended to early detection and prevention of potentially harmful economic imbalances, too. Macroeconomic surveillance cannot be based on a static and simplistic reference framework.
