"Europe has almost 1 000 cities with populations of more than 50 000 and their composition is constantly evolving. Given recent population changes and migration patterns, it is important to continually assess how we want the cities of the future to develop. Answers must be found to the challenges of transport, housing, suburbanisation and green space. These responses must be tailored to local needs but recognising that issues such as unemployment, deprivation and social exclusion are universal problems. The EU’s regional and cohesion policies must address these challenges. The rise of cities as economic drivers for regions and entire countries means that the urban agenda must be based on spatial strategies that recognise the role of cities as not just places to live and work but as providing a service to those in the hinterland and beyond."@en1
