"The new protocol has undoubted benefits for both parties, strengthening partnership and cooperation in the fisheries sector, so that vessels engage in responsible and sustainable fishing. Above all, it will develop fishing opportunities. EU vessels will still have the opportunity to fish in the fishing zones of the Gulf of Guinea. This will have a positive impact on the visibility of the EU’s tuna fleet in the Atlantic and will increase competitiveness. Furthermore, it is crucial to ensure that fishing activities meet the same sustainability criteria as fishing activities in EU waters. It should be noted that the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe is a least developed country and also qualifies as a highly indebted country. Under the provisions of the agreement, greater financial assistance will be allocated to this country’s sectoral fisheries policy, which will create favourable conditions for the development of this sector. Given the country’s particularly difficult position, thanks to this agreement we can at least make a minimum contribution to the country’s economic well-being, promote the creation of new jobs, environmental and social sustainability, and fish stock preservation and restoration."@en1
