"Mr President, while debating how Greece can be rescued from a default that could cause an economic and financial storm around the world, this House is asking to increase its own budget for 2012 by almost 5%. That is simply unsellable to taxpayers around Europe and it does not enhance the credibility of the EU institutions. The EU budget has not taken us out of the crisis, and nor will it do so. There are several areas of the budget where we all know we could be cutting expenditure. Failed projects should be discontinued. Funding of projects where irregularities have occurred or funding to regions where citizens’ rights are being disregarded should simply be stopped. If common sense prevails, this Parliament will vote for a reduction of the EU budget for 2012. If this is not the case, the EU’s already embattled citizens will have to rely on their heads of state to defend them."@en1
