"The reform of the EU’s common agricultural policy is one of this Parliament’s most important tasks. The report by Mr Dess is a good basis for continuing the reform. We need a broader debate, however, to achieve the objective of environmentally friendly, resource-effective and diverse agriculture. The answer to the global problems of agriculture will not be found by increasing production in Europe, but is part of a broader equation, in which economic, social and environmental issues are taken into account. Instead of a narrow-minded agricultural policy, we need a food policy that considers the whole food production chain, from start to finish. That is the best way that we can respond to the serious, all-encompassing challenges faced by agriculture in its present form in the 2000s."@en1
