"Madam President, in addition to the opening of a delegation in Ulaanbaatar – something that we can no longer put off, not least because pursuing relations from Beijing is very bad for symbolic reasons – and in addition to the long-awaited partnership agreement, we are all aware both of the country’s mineral wealth and of its weaknesses in terms of social justice, even though Mongolia has, in its own way, developed a form of democratic cohesion.
I would especially like to ask the Commission where Mongolia should be placed from a geostrategic point of view: it is not a country covered by the Central Asia strategy. I think, however, that some of the measures in this strategy could perhaps be extended to Mongolia, in view of its cultural history, which is similar to that of the other countries. The country also currently has observer status in the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, and the European Union is examining the possibility of helping it become a full member, given the ancient cultural links that exist between Europe and Mongolia."@en1
