"Divergences in contract law in the Member States create structural problems that discourage businesses and consumers. Mrs Wallis’s motion for a resolution favours the creation of an optional instrument for European contract law for consumers and businesses by virtue of a general regulation, and this is why I voted in favour of the text. Furthermore, the instrument would not replace Member States’ contract laws, but would merely help ensure a better choice of contract model between the parties, thanks to examples based on general principles, definitions and model regulations for both commercial and consumer contracts, without going against the principles of subsidiarity and proportionality."@en1
