"The existence of European-level contract law, which has been debated at length within the institutions, could represent a range of benefits for businesses, for consumers and for the smooth running of the Internal Market. We are therefore not indifferent to the potential linked to the existence of a common body of general standards and principles applicable to contract law, in terms of increasing cross-border transactions, of regulating e-commerce and of improving consumers’ access to products. However, and as argued by the rapporteur, I believe that an optional instrument for European contract law that exists alongside national legislation, but does not replace, is a suitable choice."@en1
