"I voted against a report that proposes an optional legal instrument for contract law, effectively laying the foundations for a future body of European civil law, to take precedence over domestic civil laws. This would mean the end of national legal traditions and the laws that every Member State has laid down on issues as sensitive as civil and contract law. In any case, although the objective of introducing an optional instrument is to facilitate cross-border trade, taking the needs of consumers and companies into due account, it must be borne in mind that existing European legislation already satisfies the needs of the various actors involved. The real objective of the report therefore appears to be more ambitious than the creation of a European civil code, with which I cannot agree."@en1
