"I voted in favour of the Mitchell report because we need to learn the lessons of the last four years of using Regulation (EC) No 1905/2006 establishing a financing instrument for development cooperation (DCI). On this occasion, the objectives and scope for this development aid must be very clearly defined.
Migration is an area where we need to give priority to the coherence of policies promoting development. Thus, development aid should finance projects aimed at tackling the deep-rooted causes of migration (fighting against poverty), but it should not be used to improve border control or combat illegal immigration."@en1
