"In today’s globalised economy, the possibility and ability to learn and work in an international context is a prerequisite for a successful working life for European citizens. In spite of the severe effects that the economic crisis is having on the European labour market, industrial and technological change increases the need for workers with high and intermediate skill levels. As far as vocational education and training are concerned, the key factors listed in the Europe 2020 strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth need to be translated into practical steps at European Union level. To attain these goals, it is essential for education and vocational training to be treated as a long-term common political priority, which can only be realised with the participation and commitment of all stakeholders, the EU institutions and those involved at local and regional level. At this point, I would emphasise that action needs to be taken quickly, especially where young people are concerned: the rise in youth unemployment is, in fact, one of Europe’s most pressing challenges. The aims set out in the Europe 2020 strategy – namely, to reduce the school drop-out rate to below 10% and ensure that 40% of young people are educated to university level – must be tackled with efficient and practical measures."@en1
