"The globalisation of the economy and the relocation of European companies have led to concerns regarding the external dimension of social policy. This includes EU activities and initiatives aimed at promoting labour and social standards in third countries. Core labour standards are embedded in the eight International Labour Organisation (ILO) conventions that focus on the freedom of association and collective bargaining, the elimination of forced and compulsory labour, the elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation, and the abolition of child labour. In order for third countries to negotiate with the EU, they must respect all the ideas outlined above. This is a condition without which negotiations with third countries are impossible. Trade policy cannot ignore any failure in respecting workers’ rights and the development of society may continue only after such obstacles have been removed. It is essential to use international labour standards to ensure economic development remains very focused on improving human life and personal dignity, and not on determining conditions and rights of workers."@en1
