"Commercial relations between the European Union and Canada can go well beyond the commitments undertaken through the World Trade Organisation as long as they are based on a balanced agreement, a guarantee of proper reciprocal access to each other’s markets and improved protection for trademarks, patents and geographical indications. Fresh investments are, in our view, needed in order to ensure respect for the environment and good working conditions. Since the agricultural sector is of fundamental importance, we urge the Commission to negotiate an agreement that is beneficial for producers and consumers alike, and which ensures fair competition between providers of agricultural products from the European Union and Canada. Lastly, we think that the Council should obtain Parliament’s consent before signing any further international commercial agreements, and that Parliament should be kept informed throughout all phases of the procedure in order to guarantee greater democratic control. This is the only way that we can achieve higher growth in trade and investments between the European Union and Canada."@en1
