"The times we live in make it clear that there is a need to link up the Member States and the European Union in the most diverse situations and instances. This coordination is also very important in the United Nations (UN). I would even say it is essential to ensure European interests and values are defended and safeguarded in what is the most comprehensive and decisive international organisation.
Regardless of future changes to how the Union is represented within the UN, and in the Security Council – a debate which is still open – in particular, there is increasingly a need to join up the efforts of European countries so as to, alongside the Union’s representatives overseas, encourage a collective capacity for intervention and influence. Regular consultations between the ambassadors of the Member States and those of the EU will be an important step along this path. At the same time, the Union should contribute to making the UN more efficient and transparent, and improve the management of its financial resources. The creation of a United Nations parliamentary assembly within the framework of the United Nations system is an interesting proposal that is worth studying and debating."@en1
