"I voted in favour of admitting Romania and Bulgaria to the Schengen area. Following careful examination, the EU committee responsible recognised that these countries have fulfilled all the criteria for membership of the Schengen area: they offer sufficient assurances as regards the protection of national borders on land, at sea and in the air and they have mastered the Schengen Information System for data exchange and reliably ensure data protection. My group considers the introduction of new criteria for membership at this point to be wrong because this would mean applying double standards for these countries. The difficulties that Romania and Bulgaria still face – organised crime and corruption – are, undoubtedly, serious accusations against the governments of these countries, which should combat these phenomena more effectively. However, in my opinion, closing Schengen’s gates to Romania and Bulgaria should not penalise honest citizens, who would suffer the most if they now lost the opportunity to travel freely throughout Europe."@en1
