"Mr President, I voted for the report, but concern remains over the public funding of embryonic cell research. According to the Advocate General of the European Court of Justice, embryonic cells are considered to be human embryos, and therefore beings from which life arises. These cells, since they represent the first stage of the human life they will become, must be legally defined as embryos, the patenting of which must be ruled out. On the basis of this statement, the European Commission should immediately take into account the decisions and conclusions of the European Court of Justice and adapt its policies on the funding of science and research to them."@en1
