"Mr President, I have the impression that in recent discussions in the European Parliament, we have been thinking increasingly in categories of defending ourselves along a Limes line – sometimes this runs along the European Union’s external border, but sometimes we want to erect and defend borders within the European Union.
I want to say firmly and emphatically: there are no substantive reasons, today, to delay Bulgaria and Romania’s joining the Schengen area. We should oppose all attempts at restricting contacts between citizens, and we should oppose all attempts at restricting freedom to travel and be active in the European Union. The discussion to which I am listening shows how very divided the European Union is today. Those who today are raising artificial arguments against Bulgaria and Romania joining the Schengen area will have on their conscience responsibility for the destruction of the political project which is the European Union, and they will never now escape that responsibility."@en1
