lpv:translated text	"The Treaty of Lisbon lays the foundations for the European Union to establish itself as a credible and influential player on the international scene. From this stems my support for a report that is necessary in order to evaluate advances made in the common security and defence policy following the entry into force of the Treaty of Lisbon and to identify what scope there is for improvement. As a member of the Subcommittee on Security and Defence, I have followed this report closely. Personally, I have stressed the need for cooperation among Member States in the field of research, development and innovation in matters of defence. We find ourselves in the middle of an economic crisis and, as a consequence, we must pull together in order to reduce costs and increase the interoperability of the military capacity of our Member States. All this will serve not only to reduce defence expenditure but also to increase the autonomy of the European Union on the international scene. I believe that this point of view has been well captured in the report, which constitutes a step in the right direction in terms of promoting a common security and defence policy which is more effective, coordinated and consistent with the rest of the policies of the European Union and its Member States."@en1
