"The EU is India’s largest trade partner, with trade in goods and services worth approximately EUR 84 billion in 2009-2010. The EU accounts for 20.15% of India’s total exports and 13.32% of India’s total imports. Conversely, India accounts for 2.6% of the EU’s total exports and 2.2% of the EU’s total imports. In view of this, we cannot fail to take into consideration the fact that the objectives of the common commercial policy must be fully coordinated with the overall objectives of the European Union. According to the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, the common commercial policy must be conducted ‘in the context of the principles and objectives of the Union’s external action’ and must contribute ‘
to sustainable development, the eradication of poverty and the protection of human rights’. As such, it is very important that the following not be forgotten in these negotiations: the use of child labour, and the failure to comply with international social and environmental standards, which constitutes a form of dumping, detrimental to European companies and workers. It is therefore essential that the Commission clarify these points before concluding a trade agreement."@en1
