"Between Parliament and the Commission, there are approximately 4 600 organisations accredited as interest groups. Following the adoption of the Treaty of Lisbon, Parliament’s powers have been strengthened, making it colegislator in almost all areas under the ordinary legislative procedure. This has attracted the attention of an even larger number of representatives of interest groups. This report, which I voted for, follows the institutional agreement on the creation of a joint space for registering and exercising scrutiny over lobbyists and other interest groups in the Commission and Parliament. A common register between the various institutions will be created with the aim of contributing to greater transparency, and which will differentiate between interest groups representing civil society and public authorities. In the interests of transparency, the creation of a system for the compulsory declaration of all meetings between registered organisations and the Members responsible for related legislation is equally important, and should be recorded in an annex to the respective reports or recommendations. It is just as important that the Council join this register."@en1
