"The Treaty on European Union provides a framework for, and encourages relations between, the European institutions and European political leaders, on the one hand, and civil society, EU citizens and representative associations, on the other. Following the ratification of the Treaty of Lisbon, Parliament’s powers have been strengthened and it is now colegislator in almost all areas under the ordinary legislative procedure. As a result, it is the focus for the attention of an even larger number of lobbyists, who, moreover, play a key role in the open, pluralist dialogue on which a democratic system is based and act as an important source of information for Members in the performance of their duties It is, however, essential to establish mechanisms for recording and monitoring. In view of this, I voted in favour of this report on the amendment to Parliament’s Rules of Procedure following the establishment of a common register for the registration and monitoring of organisations and individuals who participate in any way in the drafting and implementation of EU policies."@en1
