"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, I would like to thank Mr Barnier for the excellent work he is doing. We need to restore stability and confidence, and I think that an enormous effort is being made to that end. The legislative framework for the management of the crisis is providing Mr Barnier with the means to take a range of preventive measures as well as to manage the current situation. We need to watch out for and resist the bureaucratic temptation to create bodies, agencies or other instruments that could complicate life in future.
A coordinated approach within a general European Union legal framework is essential to prevent problems and future financial crises and to allow the banks to operate in a more orderly fashion and under the same conditions throughout Europe. I am of the opinion that, in order to ensure transparency, regulators should be continually developing standard rules and procedures.
I would stress, however, that care must be taken when publishing results. The financial year 2010 showed clearly how sensitive and important the publication of results is in terms of consistency. They can also produce counterproductive reactions in the markets and cause disruption. Attention must therefore be paid to this issue, and it must be taken seriously into consideration."@en1
