"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, it has been 25 years since the Chernobyl disaster, but we do not have any comprehensive, systematic research into the catastrophe’s effect on health. There are just separate, uncoordinated studies: for example, regarding the increased incidence of thyroid cancer in Ukraine and Belarus. This absence of comprehensive, followup studies is a disgrace, and I would ask the Commission to commit clearly to measures to carry out a comprehensive, international study of this kind.
The claim has been made in this debate that Chernobyl might only have led to the deaths of a few dozen people. The estimates for deaths at the other end of the scale are in the millions. This sort of confusion is possible precisely because there is no comprehensive research. Research of this kind would also improve the knowledge that mankind has about the effects of radiation on health."@en1
