This recommendation is on the draft Council decision concerning the conclusion, on behalf of the European Union, of the Agreement on the Protection and Sustainable Development of the Prespa Park Area, which has been classified as such since 1977 and designated a protected cross-border area under the declaration of 2 February 2000, issued by the Prespa countries: Greece, Albania and the Republic of Macedonia. The European Union is aware of the urgent need to protect and safeguard natural resources, so, starting in the 1970s, it has adopted a legislative package, the ultimate expression of which is the 2000 Water Framework Directive. The objective of the agreement concerned is to establish cooperation between the EU and the above countries in order to promote the region’s sustainable development and to protect its ecosystem, in particular through plans for the integrated management of the Prespa hydrographic basin. At a time when disasters resulting from climate change are increasing, I congratulate the Council on this project and would like to see it concluded as soon as possible."@en1
