"The European Parliament today adopted a resolution calling for the EU’s relations with Syria, Bahrain and Yemen to be reassessed in order to take account of the popular uprisings in those countries. If I thought that that was really the intention of the European institutions, it would have my full support. The key element of this resolution is the call for ‘the suspension of further negotiations over the signing of the still pending Association Agreement between the EU and Syria’ and the fact that ‘the conclusion of such an agreement should depend on the capacity of the Syrian authorities to carry out the expected democratic reforms in tangible form’. Point duly noted. However, I have to point out, and the resolution itself admits it, that ‘the signing of this Agreement has been delayed at Syria’s request since October 2009’. One can only wonder, then, what impact this declaration will really have. I therefore abstained on this text."@en1
