"I deeply regret the exploitation for partisan ends of the disaster that has struck Japan. The European Parliament has missed an opportunity to send a strong message to the Member States and the European Commission with the aim of improving the safety of nuclear power plants in Europe and in neighbouring countries, in particular, through stress tests. For that should be the focus of today’s debate, so that we can ensure, on behalf of the public, that a form of energy that is still the main component of the energy mix in most European countries – and will certainly remain so over the next few years until a sustainable, renewable and non-CO
emitting energy source can replace it and meet our society’s electricity needs – is as safe as it can possibly be."@en1
