"Madam President, the Commissioner’s final comment gives me some cause for hope. As you are leaving for Greece tomorrow, Commissioner, you should visit an area close to Athens, where there have been daily clashes between residents and the police forces camped there for four months now, with injuries and other incidents, in connection with the landfill facility, given that, as you explained, we have to close landfills. The question is: if this is the last desirable solution, why do you accept environmental impact assessments when, in numerous facilities, such as that which you will probably visit, we basically have waste ending up in streams. This is scandalous and the environmental damage – if you do not intervene, if you do not stop this economic scandal, because these installations are cofinanced by the European Union – will be unavoidable. Please intervene immediately, because things are not as theoretical as you explained but, be that as it may, I thank you."@en1
