"Madam President, Mr Van Rompuy, Mr Barroso, ladies and gentlemen, the Council’s conclusions on economic policy and the Euro Plus Pact open up a real European Pandora’s box, out of which only problems will arise, and European citizens will have to face those problems. The calling into question of social welfare and wage-indexing, the linking of productivity and wages, reduced purchasing power and an increase in the retirement age are just a few examples of the austerity crisis that awaits us. I am appalled to see that the Council has clearly not learnt any lessons from the crisis.
Of course, we need a policy based on budgetary responsibility and rigour, no one is disputing that, but we should not insist that the citizens make all of the effort, since they are our only chance of coming out of this crisis on top. You forget all too quickly the financial and banking sector, which should also contribute to these crucial efforts and should above all act more responsibly.
When will we finally see a tax on financial transactions? At a time when 16 million Europeans are out of work, prices are soaring and speculative shocks are shaking the continent, the Council is placing the burden of sacrifice on labour and workers instead of on capital, and that is unacceptable."@en1
