The disastrous earthquake that struck Japan on 11 March cannot pass unnoticed in the eyes of the world; it must be our cue to reflect on the political and socio-economic aspects of the disastrous consequences of the tsunami. Like all my colleagues, in approving this motion for a resolution I express my deepest sympathy to the Japanese people who, with a great sense of civil responsibility, are reacting as best they can to the disaster. I hope and request that the EU will take action to provide humanitarian aid, through its own civil protection services, and propose suitable projects to solve the problem of nuclear contamination through a joint project with the Japanese authorities to try, as far as possible, to restore the situation to normal."@en1
