"The motion for a resolution is focused on what we believe to be essential at this time: expressing complete solidarity with the Japanese people, especially the victims of the disaster that has struck the country, and their families. The EU should express this solidarity in a concrete way by making available forms of aid which are deemed necessary in the appropriate areas, to be defined and implemented in conjunction with the Japanese authorities. We therefore supported the resolution and voted in favour.
Alongside this resolution there are issues relating to nuclear safety, and the lessons to be learnt from what has happened at the Fukushima plant, a subject which we were able to address during the debate. In particular, there is a need to review and, if necessary, adjust redundancies in the security systems in the existing plants in EU Member States. There is also a need to undertake a broad discussion as a society about the energy issue, our present and future needs, and how these can be met. This should be done in a lucid way, with information about the impact, potential and limitations of each of the different types of energy."@en1
