"I was delighted to vote in favour of the extension of the mandate of the European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA) until September 2013. This agency was established in 2002 for an initial period of five years. ENISA’s mandate is important as it was set by the EU to carry out very specific technical and scientific tasks in the field of information security. It is important to have such an agency in place in order to ensure the smooth functioning of the internal market that concretely affects the daily lives of the citizens and business alike, using broadband, online banking, e-commerce and mobile phones.
Given the fact that attacks on information systems are constantly increasing, it is a critical time to have effective security measures in place in order to protect the integrity of Europe’s information systems. A top-down EU approach is required to protect the information society sector. Member States cannot do this sufficiently by themselves. It is estimated that the necessary funding for the extension of ENISA’s current mandate would be EUR 12.698 million in commitments."@en1
