I voted in favour of this resolution on the proposal for a directive of the European Parliament and of the Council on consumer rights, which merges four existing Community directives in a single legal instrument. I agree with the rapporteur’s opinion that the fragmentary nature of existing legislation deters consumers and undertakings alike from participating in cross-border trade. However, we must be cautious, because due to the nature of this area, it is rather difficult to fully harmonise legislation in the realm of consumer rights, and moreover, this may reduce the level of protection of consumer rights in certain Member States."@en1
