"Now that this draft directive has been adopted, immigrant workers will have the same rights as national workers, at least in terms of remuneration and dismissal, health and safety in the workplace, working hours and holidays. This proposal is aimed at introducing a procedure to give a single residence and work permit to legal immigrants, and to grant them a common set of rights throughout the EU.
It is thus possible to simplify the procedures so that the national authorities can grant a single residence and work permit for legal immigrants, so that they can benefit from a set of rights similar to those of the workers in the Member State where they are living. However, the admission of immigrants for the purposes of work, and the number of admissions, should remain the responsibility of the individual Member State."@en1
