"I voted against the directive on a ‘single permit’, because it is inspired by the Bolkestein Directive, which adopted the principle of the country of origin, thereby permitting different treatment of workers in respect of wages, terms, working times, social protection and so forth. The same approach is applied here to workers from ‘third countries’ outside the European Union. Different treatment has been adopted for European and non-European workers, thereby increasing competition between them and between foreign workers, depending on whether they are seconded or seasonal workers, students or residents. All these differences do is to increase exploitation and uncertainty. Despite moves by European trade unions and the progressive forces in Parliament to obtain full equality of rights for all workers, the text mainly reflects a compromise between the right and the socialists. The future directive will not apply to seconded workers or to students, will allow discrimination based on criteria such as knowledge of the language and will refuse family benefits to families of seasonal workers. Likewise, the call for the UN Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrants and Members of Their Families has been removed."@en1
