"If there were a lesson to be learnt from the recent crisis, it would be that we need to reform the institutional supervisory structure by creating European agencies and thus reformulate the entire concept of macro and micro-economic monitoring. The European Banking Authority is the result of that. Confidence in banks having been dealt a severe blow by the global financial crisis, it is important for the markets, and for Europeans in general, to start trusting the solidity and robustness of the banking institutions again and, in particular, regain confidence in the supervisory bodies. That is why the role reserved for this new European Banking Authority is so crucial for the future. Now that Parliament has approved the appointment of the Authority’s Executive Director, I hope that he will have an active, prudent and successful term."@en1
