The European Parliament today adopted an Protocol to Amend the Air Transport Agreement in place between the European Union and the United States, and I voted in favour of it.
The proposal is a significant step toward improving transatlantic relations in the area of aviation. The aviation markets in the EU and the US together represent around 60% of global air traffic. The opening up of markets to airlines will provide improved services for passengers and cargo operators, and will bring great benefits in terms of the economy and of job creation.
However, the Agreement should not be seen as the end of the process. The Agreement in question, described as second-stage, does not achieve the end objective of the complete opening up of the market, with no restrictions on either side. It is also extremely important to have consistent rules with regard to the rights of passengers, and better coordination of policies relating to this. Finally, it should also be emphasised that issues such as greater liberalisation of traffic rights, increased opportunities for foreign investment, and the effect of environmental measures on traffic rights will need to be taken into account during any future phase of negotiation."@en1
