"Under the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) industrialised countries guarantee trade preferences to all developing countries on a non-reciprocal basis. It is one of the key EU trade and development policy instruments to assist developing countries to reduce poverty by generating revenue through international trade. The regulation currently in force and valid until 31 December 2012 does not respect the new powers granted to Parliament by the Treaty of Lisbon. The new proposal for a regulation aims to create a system that is more sensitive to the interests of the beneficiary countries and economic operators, to develop more rules that allow for a better regulated reform process and to ensure that the regulation gives due importance to the task of democratic control asked of Parliament. For these reasons I voted in favour of the proposal for a new regulation that aims for greater clarity and transparency in the GSP system."@en1
