"I voted in favour of this report. In 1968, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) recommended the creation of a Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) under which industrialised countries would grant trade preferences to all developing countries on a non-reciprocal basis, not just to former colonies. The European Community was the first to implement a GSP scheme in 1971 and it has been one of the key EU trade and development policy instruments to help developing countries reduce poverty by generating revenue through international trade. The GSP scheme applied by the EU offers the most favourable treatment, granting the least-developed countries duty-free and quota-free access to the EU’s market. This system also helps promote sustainable development and good governance for developing countries ratifying and implementing international conventions and protocols on human and labour rights, environmental protection, drugs and the fight against corruption."@en1
