"Mr President, legal immigration undoubtedly has a large role to play in promoting European economic development and improving competitiveness. There is certainly a recurring problem here, though, and that is the lack of a firm legal status for immigrants and, as a result, the possibility of discrimination against them. It is not normal to have a situation where, in the 21st century, we still see incidents which essentially involve slavery. Everyone must be treated equally in the labour market. This report contained the provisions that are currently lacking in our framework of standards, and I therefore supported the creation of a legal framework in this area, something which I consider to be very important."@en1
