"Mr President, critics of the euro in my country say that the situation with Greece and Ireland demonstrates that the euro does not work. They say that it is better to be outside the euro area. They are wrong. During its ten-year history, the euro area has created stability, low inflation and, in actual fact, millions of new jobs. The permanent crisis mechanism will act as an absolutely last resort if a country gets into major economic difficulties. The euro is not the reason for the crisis, as the Commissioner usually quite rightly points out. On the contrary, the common currency is an important part of the solution, and that is the point as far as a country like Sweden is concerned, too. I therefore deeply regret the fact that in the Swedish Parliament the majority is not in favour of Sweden joining the Euro Pact. This reduces my country’s influence. If Sweden wants to belong to the EU’s inner circle, as the Swedish Government says it does, it is no good sitting outside the meeting rooms. Denmark and the Danish Government and Parliament are in favour of the euro. It should be possible for Sweden to be so, too."@en1
