"This law has effectively been designed with the intention of restricting media activities in Hungary and limiting critical scrutiny of the government, as part of wider restrictions on pluralism in Hungary. This is in direct conflict with the core principles of the EU, as set out in the Treaties and the Charter of Fundamental Rights. The Commission and the Council must continue to push for the complete overhaul or withdrawal of the law on this basis. Parliament has made it clear that the Commission should not simply roll over and give in to the Hungarian Government on this crucial issue. The Hungarian media law must also be seen as just the latest attempt to limit media freedom in Europe. It highlights the urgent need for the Commission to come forward with robust legislative proposals for upholding this core EU value."@en1
