"The freedom of expression of each individual, the free movement of information and the freedom and pluralism of the media are the cornerstones of European integration and its core values. The development and implementation of a regulatory framework for the media should respect the democratic standards for the organisation and governance of communication systems. I call upon the Hungarian authorities to restore independent governance of the media and to put an end to state interference in freedom of expression. Excessive regulation of the media is counterproductive, as it harms real pluralism in the public domain. I call upon the Hungarian authorities to involve all interested parties in reforming media law, including the opposition parties and civil society, so that they can participate in a meaningful way in the reform of this legislation, which regulates such a fundamental aspect for the functioning of a democratic society."@en1
