"Mr President, water covers the greater part of our globe. However, we do not very often appreciate the potential and significance of seas and oceans for economic development.
The Atlantic region is particularly important for fishing, transport and energy. It is the source of almost 50% of the world’s catches, as well as a variety of mineral deposits such as metals, oil and gas. Powerful climatic phenomena also occur there, and these can have catastrophic effects for coastal regions. Therefore, it is essential to draw up the right strategy for the Atlantic region – one which will enhance good management and contribute to protection of the environment and a better life for the people of the region."@en1
