We cannot continue to be dependent on Russia – you saw what they did in Georgia a few years ago – and on regimes like Gaddafi’s at the present time, with the effect this has on prices.
We look to ourselves, and if we have alternatives – which we have here through shale gas – we must exploit those to the full. There are those who are concerned about the environment, but the European Union’s record on the environment is second to none. Ask any farmer in Europe and they will tell you how concerned we are about the environment and the measures we take to protect it. The same can apply here, but we have to look at every means of getting gas from alternative suppliers and – if I might say this tongue in cheek – we can have great gas in so doing."@en1
