"Madam President, firstly, I must say that I find myself in agreement with the Commissioner and compliment him on his balanced presentation. Security of energy supply has to be the of European energy policy as we go forward. Obviously and ideally, we would have this from renewable sources and we have our policies in that regard, but otherwise, we have to look for it from other sources. We cannot continue to be dependent on Russia – you saw what they did in Georgia a few years ago – and on regimes like Gaddafi’s at the present time, with the effect this has on prices. We look to ourselves, and if we have alternatives – which we have here through shale gas – we must exploit those to the full. There are those who are concerned about the environment, but the European Union’s record on the environment is second to none. Ask any farmer in Europe and they will tell you how concerned we are about the environment and the measures we take to protect it. The same can apply here, but we have to look at every means of getting gas from alternative suppliers and – if I might say this tongue in cheek – we can have great gas in so doing."@en1
