"I support the report on the face of female poverty in the European Union as it shows the extent to which women are the first victims of poverty. I call on Europe to take practical measures to reduce the pay gap between men and women. How long will we have to carry on accepting that women should have lower pay than men? Why should a woman have to work for five years to earn what a man earns in four years, and, above all, why should she end up poorer on the pretext that she has brought up her children? This is not a society I would wish to leave to my children and grandchildren. The uncertainties of women’s working lives weigh too heavily on them, especially when they reach retirement age. Europe must be careful not to further impoverish women by promoting a genuine equal pay policy."@en1
