"In today’s part session, the report on the EU Protein Deficit by Mr Häusling was adopted by vote. The EU is heavily dependent on imports of protein crops, which are used mainly for animal feed. This involves significant risks, particularly for the European livestock sector. A series of compromise amendments has improved the initial report considerably. The report that has been adopted calls on the Commission to opt for a medium- and long-term vision of a policy for protein crops and asks for the reform of the common agricultural policy to introduce new provisions that support farmers in the improvement of crop rotation, as well as to reduce the deficit of plant proteins and price volatility. The report also calls for research studies on seeds and their contribution to disease control. The report asks the Commission to guarantee an unimpeded supply of soya beans into the European market, providing a technical solution to the low level presence of genetically modified organisms for food and feed imported into the EU."@en1
