"We are all very well aware of the importance of health. Unfortunately, we often fail to appreciate it properly until one of our family members or friends falls ill, or we fall ill ourselves. Access to healthcare is only one of many factors determining the health of the citizens of any country or area. Other factors which have an equally significant impact on the health of the citizens include occupational status and the resultant material situation, access to education, advanced age or disability, belonging to a minority group and many more. ‘Social stratification’ and archaic divisions into ‘classes’ also result in disproportionate differences among Europeans in terms of health. Our priority, and the priority of the European Union, should be to ensure that absolutely all the inhabitants of our continent enjoy equal access to healthcare, and to eliminate social differences."@en1
