"Hitherto, insufficient attention has been paid to the issue of narrowing health inequalities in Europe. This is a problem that needs to be resolved. There are various reasons for the health inequalities between population groups. They relate, for example, to living conditions, education and training, occupation, the prevention of disease and services that promote health. It is good that people have started more and more to understand the link between special problems and health problems. These problems have to be resolved comprehensively. It is possible to address the factors that result in health inequalities through sociopolitical action. For example, alcohol consumption can be dealt with through policies implemented at national level (like pricing and tax policies), through regional policy (by stepping up controls), and through local activity policy (for example, by developing leisure activities for youth). At European level, we need to exchange information on best health practices between the Member States. It is important that we stress the need to reduce health inequalities at all levels of decision making. In particular, sustained cooperation between all actors is needed to reduce health inequalities."@en1
