"I was anxious to support Edite Estrela’s report on reducing health inequalities between the countries of the European Union, but also within them. This is simply because it mentions a very wide range of the persistent inequalities in this area within the Union. These inequalities, which are unfair, are the product of numerous economic, environmental and lifestyle factors, but also of difficulties in accessing healthcare, be it for economic reasons or because of ‘poor distribution of medical resources’ in certain areas of the Union. Although health policy remains (for the most part) a national responsibility, we MEPs have a duty to encourage our Member States to continue their efforts to reduce socio-economic inequalities, thereby also reducing disparities in healthcare. Member States must ensure that vulnerable groups (the disabled, the elderly, migrants…and women!) really can enjoy fair access to healthcare. A special focus is also needed on health prevention and information, in coordination with organisations from civil society."@en1
